A Study on Anion Exchange Equilibrium in Mixed Organic-aqueous Solutions

Abstract
Anion exchange resin selectivities have been measured for bicarbonate and thiosulfate ion against chloride resin in organic¡©aqueous mixed solvent, e.g., acetone¡©water and n¡©propyl alcohol¡©water mixtures at 25¡É.
Anion exchange equilibrium in the organic¡©aqueous media are found to have many factors, such as electrostatic interaction, solvation phenomena, solvent structure, and interaction between resinate and solvent, etc.
The selectivity coefficients of bicarbonate and thiosulfate ion against chloride resin are in order of HCO_3^-<S_2O_3^= in organic¡©aqueous mixtures. The resin preferentially absorbs water in mixed solvent. In organic¡©water mixed solution, resin phase is a much better solvating medium than external solution. A large ion would tend to be further squeezed out of the external solution into the resin phase.
In the mixtures, acetone¡©water and n¡©propyl alcohol¡©water, the selectivity coefficients of anion against chloride at the given dielectric constant of the solutions are in order of acetone>n¡©propyl alcohol. The effects of the organic solvent are significant.
